a day in los angeles

Nate and I haven't gone on any hikes since we did Mt. Baldy in July. I think that one traumatized us--or maybe it has just been the doggone heat--because I haven't even thought about hiking since then. Actually, there was one day that we grabbed our packs to go hiking in Malibu but on the way there it started raining, so we decided to stick around town and ended up watching a random little league game that turned out to be highly entertaining. Who knew that little league was so exciting?

Anyway, I worked extra hours during the week, so my manager had someone cover my Saturday shift and gave me the day off, woohoo! I told Nate that we could do whatever he wanted with our day together and he found this small, waterfall hike in Eaton Canyon. It was roughly four miles round-trip with little incline, making for a great easing-ourselves-back-into-hiking outing. And there was a waterfall! I've said it before, waterfalls make everything ten times better, especially since water is scarce around these parts because of the drought.

(Disclaimer: apparently there was dust on the lens of my phone's camera all day and most of these photos are a little bit blurry because of it. I didn't notice the problem until we were done with our hike, so I was pretty bummed about that. Luckily, Nate took a few photos on his phone; the ones that look super sharp are from him. He's a keeper, for sure.)

See the blur? *sob*
The light coming through the trees was incredible.
Where's Waldo? I mean, Nate.

A few months ago, Nate and I read one of those Buzzfeed list articles about the coolest bookstores in the USA (or was it the world?) and one of them was in Los Angeles! I had forgotten about it, so when Nate took us on a detour there on our way home from Eaton Canyon I was completely surprised. It's called The Last Bookstore. It is a pretty neat place filled with books and records and has a gallery that features the work of local artists. There were so many books that I wanted, but I narrowed it down to two: "The Robe" by Lloyd C. Douglas--one of my top five favorite books! I can't believe that I found it--and "The Dutch Twins" by Lucy Fitch Perkins. I've never heard of this one before but, being part Dutch, I couldn't resist picking it up and I'm so glad I did! It's adorable and reminds me of the pair of Dutch dolls that my parents have that I loved playing with as a child.

If you're ever in LA and want to hang out somewhere chill for a while, check out The Last Bookstore. I could have spent hours there, but I had to think of Nate's sanity, too :] Do you have any suggestions for things to do/see nearby LA? I want to get to know this city better.

Kitty!
This was the vintage children's books section where I somehow stumbled upon "The Robe".

    1. I LOVE my library. I currently have 4 books checked out :] It's been so hot around here lately, and I don't have AC in my apartment, so the library has become my favorite place to escape the heat.
LA is a great place to visit, especially if you enjoy hiking because there are a ton of trails surrounding the city. Where are you from?
